Are all seats occupied on flights?

As a passenger, you usually only get to see the seat map when reserving seats while booking the flights or while checking in. What the airline doesn't tell you: many seats are shown as occupied, but in reality, they are blocked. These seats are then available once you can check-in.

People Also Ask

If you were not able to make an advance seat assignment, keep an eye on the seat map as these seats will begin to open up once check-in begins and then once the gate opens for the flight.

A: Not always. It is at the airlines' discretion what to show, and they use said discretion. Sometimes this means showing only a few of the available seats. Q: Why would some seats be hidden?

MORE DETAILS

Seats that are shown as unavailable on the map may be reserved to accommodate family seating, passengers with disabilities and crew members.

MORE DETAILS

Emphatically, no. You will likely get assigned a seat during check-in (though you should still skip it if the airline tries to tack on a fee) or, at the very least, at the gate. Again: You don't have to select a seat in order to get a seat. You just might get stuck with a suboptimal one if you choose to skip it.

Some airlines do not offer complimentary pre-reserved seating on all flights. If a seat map is unavailable or there are no seats to select, it means that the airline is not allowing you to select pre-reserved seat assignments.

You likely won't be given a precise number of people booked on the flight, but the phone agents should be able to guide you through your options.

If there are not enough passengers who are willing to give up their seats voluntarily, an airline may deny you a seat on an aircraft based on criteria that it establishes, such as the passenger's check-in time, the fare paid by the passenger, or the passenger's frequent flyer status.

Southwest is probably the most unique and quirky airline in the world. If you don't understand what the question is referring to, instead of being assigned a specific seat on Southwest, you are given a specific spot in line to board. Once onboard, you simply pick any seat and sit there.

Passengers can inquire about overbooking by contacting their respective airlines or using apps that show available seats per cabin. If your flight is overbooked, airlines will usually ask for volunteers to give up their seats and offer compensation in return.

Ask the airline to check the “USAGE” status of the underlying ticket record. You'll need the ticket number, or the original locator, at a minimum. If the ticket says “USED” they boarded the flight. If it says 'EXCHANGED” they changed it into something else & if it says “OPEN” or “NO SHOW” they didn't fly.
