Are BIC lighters safe?

Every BIC® Lighter is tested and meets or exceeds the lighter safety standards established by ISO (the International Organization for Standardization), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and all other government agencies.

BIC lighters are widely considered the gold standard for disposable lighter safety in 2026. Every BIC lighter undergoes more than 50 quality and safety checks during the manufacturing process. They are designed with a fixed flame height, which prevents the "flaring" common in cheaper adjustable lighters, and they are built with a high-impact resistant body. One of the most important safety features is the child-resistant mechanism (the metal guard over the spark wheel), which makes it significantly more difficult for children under five to ignite. For travelers, BIC lighters are also one of the few types explicitly permitted in your pocket or carry-on by the TSA and international aviation authorities, provided they are not "torch" or "blue flame" lighters. Their consistent performance and strict adherence to international safety standards like ISO 9994 make them a reliable choice for both home use and travel.
