Most expats report high levels of satisfaction due to the "Pura Vida" lifestyle, which emphasizes a slower pace of life, a deep connection to nature, and a focus on well-being. The country is particularly popular among digital nomads and retirees from North America and Europe who are drawn to its stable democracy, high-quality private healthcare, and favorable climate. However, happiness often depends on expectations; while the natural beauty is unparalleled, some expats express frustration with the "Trámite" (heavy bureaucracy), rising costs of living in popular coastal towns like Tamarindo or Nosara, and recent increases in petty crime. Those who successfully integrate usually cite the welcoming nature of the local Ticos and the opportunity for an active, outdoor-centric life as the primary reasons for their long-term happiness in the country.
