Are foot passengers allowed on ferries to France?

Foot passengers and Cars on Ferries P&O customers can travel as a foot passenger from Dover to Calais between 9am and 7pm on selected sailings. Irish Ferries and DFDS do not currently permit foot passengers to travel on their ships. Traveling with a vehicle is permitted on all ferry companies that service this route.

All foot passengers must check-in at the ticket counter prior to boarding, and proceed to the skywalk for screening. The screening process begins 45 minutes prior to departure, and concludes 30 minutes prior to departures.

They did last time.. In my experience the drinks on board Brittany Ferries were very cheap. They had a shop which sold Scotch cheaper than you could buy it in Scotland - the food was also reasonable and excellent. There is no problem drinking in your own alcohol in your cabin.
