The Exos 58 is a surprisingly comfortable pack, especially considering its 2.6 lb weight. It's fantastic carrying up to 30 lbs, and decent to 40 lbs, but we wouldn't want to carry much more than that.

Osprey packs are built well, and for their weight tend to have good and comfortable weight transfer capability — before I lightened my load and switched to lighter packs, I never had a pack as comfortable as my Atmos 65 for long trips carrying a ton of food and gear.

The Marines first brought the Osprey into service in 2007, and it has been central to the adoption of a whole new way of war. They have dispensed with heavy mechanised forces like tanks in favour of rapid manoeuvres, light vehicles, long-range missile technology and island hopping.

While both versions of the Osprey Porter are carry-on compliant, only the 30 liter version is smaller enough to fit under a plane seat. If you prioritize traveling lightly, or if you're pairing the Osprey Porter with another piece of luggage, then the Osprey Porter 30 will be a better fit for you.

Check your airline's carry on weight limits before you fly. Most likely, you'll be able to carry 15-22 lb. Choose a travel backpack that weighs 20% or less of that limit so that you'll have 80% of the limit for your stuff. When you start packing, remember to wear your heaviest stuff or put it in your personal item.

But, based on my own experience, 70L is too large for a carry-on item with most airlines. If you're looking for the optimal balance between the largest bag possible, and the most airlines it would be allowed on, I find that 35L (53x35x20-cm) is allowed on 155 of the 175 airlines I could find data for.

Is 65L backpack too big for Europe? I recommend a backpack around 40L-50L. Personally, I wouldn't go over 65L, but some people like a bigger bag. You can always go smaller, but I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than 35L — unless you're into minimalist travel.

70L is definitely too big. I believe the 55L is a 40L + a 15L daypack. This will probably work, but double check the length, width, and height, and make sure none of those dimensions are larger than allowed for a carry on.
