Are purses allowed in the Colosseum?

The Colosseum has several safety rules and one of them is that large backpacks or bags are not allowed in. While 'large' is a pretty generic word, open to interpretation, what this usually means is that normal size purses and handbags are ok but travel backpacks or travel luggage is not.
