Are steam trains still used in UK?

The UK stopped using steam trains for regular passenger service in 1968. The last steam-hauled scheduled passenger service ran on August 4, 1968, between Liverpool and Carlisle. However, steam trains continue to be operated for heritage and tourist purposes in certain areas of the UK.

The last steam locomotive built for mainline British Railways was 92220 Evening Star, which was completed in March 1960. The last steam-hauled service trains on the British Railways network ran on 11 August 1968, but the use of steam locomotives in British industry continued into the 1980s.

Many locomotives can last 30–40 years, depending on the maintenance done on them. Our GG1 Lasted 41 years, but many of the steam locomotives were retired early. So they had years left in them, but the company did not want to run steam anymore, so they were retired early.
