Are the Florida Keys safe from hurricane Ian?

The Florida Keys was spared much of the damage that Hurricane Ian inflicted on Fort Myers and other areas of the state's Gulf Coast, but the powerful storm brought significant surge to the island chain, forcing well-known beaches to close. Most have reopened after repairs.

In 2026, the Florida Keys are considered fully recovered and safe following the impacts of Hurricane Ian, which occurred in late September 2022. While the Keys were not the primary target of Ian's catastrophic Category 4 winds (which devastated the Fort Myers area), they did experience significant storm surge flooding, particularly in Key West and the Lower Keys. The storm caused damage to seawalls, flooded low-lying businesses, and caused temporary power outages. However, the infrastructure in the Keys is built for resilience, and the tourism industry bounced back quickly. Today, all major attractions, including Duval Street, the Hemingway House, and the various coral reef dive sites, are operational. Visitors in 2026 will find no lingering evidence of the 2022 storm, though the region continues to emphasize hurricane preparedness as part of its standard seasonal safety protocols for residents and tourists alike.
