Are there bathrooms at Mount Vesuvius?

At the start of the main hiking trail of Mount Vesuvius, there is a small toilet behind the café near the entrance. To use it, you'll have only if you buy something there first. The toilet isn't very clean, has no water, and often has no paper.

Facilities at Mount Vesuvius are quite limited, so planning is essential. There are no public bathrooms at the very summit or along the actual crater rim trail. The primary bathroom facilities are located at the "Piazzale di Quota 1000," which is the main parking area and bus drop-off point where the hiking trail begins. These are typically paid toilets (usually costing around €1.00), so you should carry small coins in Euros. In 2026, some of the small souvenir and snack shacks located halfway up the trail may offer very basic, private facilities for paying customers, but these are not guaranteed and are often closed during the off-season or in bad weather. It is strongly advised to use the restrooms at the visitor center at the base or at the parking lot before you begin the 20-30 minute steep ascent to the crater. Given that the hike and time spent at the top can easily take 2 hours round-trip, the lack of facilities at the summit is a frequent surprise for tourists. Always check the operational status of the "Quota 1000" square before heading up, as maintenance can sometimes temporarily close the only available facilities on the mountain.
