The suggestion to un-pack outside, shake everything well, immediately wash clothing and leave bags out in the sun was given to me on our very first trip (BI) by a long time visitor who learned the hard way. Culex quinquefasciatus is found on all islands and is the most common nigh-biting mosquito in Hawaii. The immature stages of all mosquitoes occur in water; only the adult mosquito lives out of water. Up to 250 are laid singly or in clusters, depending on the species.
Hawaii has no native snakes. But, unfortunately, that doesn't mean it's snake-free. The islands have seen their fair share of snake species thanks to travel, stowaways, and illegal smuggling. However, Hawaii is far from overrun, in part, thanks to the fact that it's illegal to own snakes.
