In 2026, the German Autobahn remains largely toll-free for passenger cars and motorcycles. Germany has famously avoided implementing a "vignette" or toll system for private light vehicles, unlike many of its neighbors. However, a comprehensive electronic toll system called Toll Collect applies to all vehicles with a maximum technically permissible laden mass of 7.5 tonnes or more. This primarily targets heavy goods vehicles (trucks) to fund the maintenance of the massive highway network. If you are driving a standard rental car or personal vehicle, you can drive the length of the country without paying a cent in road fees. The only exceptions are two specific tunnels: the Warnow Tunnel in Rostock and the Herren Tunnel in Lübeck, which charge small private tolls. If you cross into Austria, Switzerland, or France, be prepared to pay immediately, as those countries require a paid sticker (vignette) or have toll booths at regular intervals along their motorways.
