Are there whale sharks in Destin?

While it is not common to see whale sharks in the Destin area, it does happen on occasion. One whale shark watcher shared that the last time she saw a whale shark was more than 10 years ago. Another local fisherman, Captain Joe Quaranto of the Silver Lining, said this is the first time he's seen one in about 20 years.

While it is not a common daily occurrence, whale sharks are indeed spotted in the waters off Destin, Florida. In 2025 and early 2026, there were several notable sightings of these "gentle giants" in the Gulf of Mexico, including a pair of sharks nicknamed Ivey and Oliver that made headlines. Whale sharks are migratory and typically prefer warmer, deeper tropical waters, but they occasionally venture closer to the Florida Panhandle's emerald coast during their seasonal movements. For tourists, seeing one is a rare "bucket list" moment that usually happens by chance during offshore fishing or diving trips rather than a guaranteed tour experience. If you do spot one, marine experts remind boaters to maintain a safe distance and not to obstruct the shark's path, as they are a protected species. Their presence in Destin is often viewed by local marine biologists as a positive indicator of a healthy, nutrient-rich Gulf ecosystem.
