At what age do you need a metro ticket?

Metro Fare Basics Each passenger must pay a fare; however, two children under age five may travel free with a paying passenger. SmarTrip® cards are used to pay fares on both Metrorail and Metrobus. Metrorail fares are variable depending on time-of-day and distance traveled.

Child bus fares apply to children aged 5-15. Up to 2 children under 5 years old can travel free of charge with any fare paying customer or pass holder (including ENCT).

Things you need to know: Children age 15 and under must be accompanied on the same bus by a parent, legal guardian, or another passenger at least 16 years old. Any traveler, regardless of age, occupying a seat must pay the applicable adult fare. Travelers age 16 and up qualify as an adult when traveling.

Children 13, 14 and 15 years old may travel unaccompanied in accordance with the Amtrak Unaccompanied Minor Policy. Unaccompanied minor travel is permitted only on Amtrak trains. Travel is not permitted on Thruway motorcoach service, or on any other connecting services.
