Can a 17 year old stay in a hotel alone in France?

The minimum age in France is 16 for hotels, but you probably need an authorisation letter from your parents and the stay may also need to be paid in advance or guaranteed by an adult's credit card. There may be lower age limits for youth hostels but generally such bookings need to be made by schools or parents.

In France, a 17-year-old can stay in a hotel alone, but it is not a "guaranteed" right; it is subject to individual hotel policies and the submission of specific documents. Most French hotels and youth hostels (like MIJE) will accept 17-year-old guests provided they present a signed parental authorization form and a photocopy of the parent's ID at check-in. This is because, under French law, a minor cannot enter into a legal contract (the hotel booking) without parental consent. While some luxury hotels may strictly enforce an 18+ policy for insurance reasons, the vast majority of mid-range and budget accommodations in 2026 are "minor-friendly," provided the traveler is nearly of age and has the proper paperwork to prove their parents have sanctioned the stay.
