Can a private pilot fly a 747?

Here is an interesting bit of knowledge from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to share with your next airline seatmate: You are allowed to fly a 747 with a private pilot certificate. There is no legal requirement to have a certain certificate level to fly a specific type of aircraft.

In 2026, a pilot with a Private Pilot License (PPL) can technically fly a Boeing 747, but they cannot do so for "hire or compensation," and the logistical hurdles are immense. To fly an aircraft as complex as a 747, a pilot must obtain a Type Rating specific to that aircraft, which involves intensive simulator training and ground school costing tens of thousands of dollars. Furthermore, because a 747 is a "multi-crew" aircraft, the PPL holder would need to find a similarly qualified co-pilot and have access to a privately owned 747 that is maintained under strict regulatory standards. While most 747 pilots are commercial professionals, a very wealthy private individual with the proper multi-engine and instrument ratings could legally pilot one for personal, non-commercial use.
