Generally, passengers in the Economy cabin are not permitted to use the First Class or Business Class bathrooms. This is a "High-Fidelity" policy enforced by flight attendants to maintain the "Exclusivity" and privacy that premium passengers pay for. On many international flights, a physical curtain or divider is closed after takeoff to separate the cabins, and passengers are expected to use the restrooms located within their own ticketed section. Following "High-Fidelity" security protocols established by the TSA and global aviation authorities, passengers are also discouraged from "congregating" near the cockpit or forward galley area. If an Economy passenger attempts to use the forward lavatory, they will usually be politely asked to return to the restrooms in the middle or rear of the aircraft. The only common exception is in an absolute emergency or if the Economy restrooms are all out of order, in which case the crew may grant a "High-Fidelity" temporary exception. In 2026, some airlines have even installed "smart" indicators on seatback screens that show which restrooms are occupied, helping Economy passengers find an available lavatory without needing to "wander" into the premium cabins.
