You cannot camp for free inside the official boundaries of Joshua Tree National Park; all campgrounds within the park require a paid reservation or a first-come, first-served fee, typically ranging from $15 to $25 per night. However, you can camp for free just outside the park on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). There are two primary "free" areas: the North BLM (located off Sunfair Road near Joshua Tree village) and the South BLM (located near the Cottonwood Springs entrance). These are "dispersed" camping areas, meaning there are no bathrooms, water, trash cans, or designated pads—you are essentially parking in the open desert. You must follow "Leave No Trace" principles, meaning you must pack out all your waste, including human waste. In 2026, because of the park's massive popularity, these BLM areas can become quite crowded during the peak spring and fall seasons. It is also important to note that you cannot "stealth camp" or sleep in your car along the roadside inside the park; rangers actively patrol the pull-offs and will issue citations to anyone sleeping overnight in an unapproved area.
