VFS has moved almost exclusively to an appointment-only system to manage the high volume of applicants and ensure biometric data (fingerprints and photos) can be collected efficiently. While "walk-in" services were occasionally available in the past for a high "Premium Lounge" fee, most European consulates (such as France, Italy, and Germany) now strictly mandate that an appointment slot be booked online through the VFS website before you arrive at the center. There are rare exceptions for urgent humanitarian grounds (such as a medical emergency or a death in the family), but these usually require prior email authorization from the consulate. For standard tourism or business, attempting to "walk in" will likely result in being turned away at the door. To avoid delays, travelers are advised to book their slots at least 2–3 months in advance, especially during the peak summer and holiday travel seasons when appointment availability becomes extremely limited.
