Can I pay to upgrade from Delta Basic Economy?

Low Fare with Restrictions. Save with Basic Economy, but please remember refunds and upgrades are not available at any time. Basic Economy is best for those traveling by themselves with firm travel plans.

On Delta Air Lines in 2026, Basic Economy tickets are generally not eligible for paid or complimentary upgrades to higher cabins like Delta Comfort+, First Class, or Delta One. This restriction is a core part of the "Basic" fare experience, which is designed for price-sensitive travelers willing to trade flexibility for a lower cost. If you find yourself needing a better seat, you cannot simply pay the difference in the app to jump cabins. However, Delta occasionally allows Basic Economy passengers to purchase specific seat assignments within the main cabin if available, though this does not change the fare class or include extra perks. If a premium experience is essential, your only option is typically to cancel the flight (subject to a cancellation fee of $99–$199) and use the remaining eCredit to book a "Main Cabin" ticket, which is eligible for future upgrades.
