Can I switch from Delta SkyMiles to Amex Gold?

In addition, if you have a card that's attached to a loyalty program, such as one of the Delta SkyMiles credit cards, you cannot switch products to a different rewards program.

You cannot "switch" or "product change" from a co-branded Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express card directly to the standard American Express® Gold Card. This is because the Delta cards are part of a specific "co-brand" family, while the standard Gold card is a "Membership Rewards" card. In 2026, Amex rules generally only allow product changes within the same family (e.g., from Delta Gold to Delta Platinum). To get the standard Amex Gold card, you must apply for it as a new account. This is actually a high-value move because it allows you to earn a second welcome bonus. Once you have the new Amex Gold, you can choose to cancel your Delta card or downgrade it to the "Blue" (no-annual-fee) version to keep your credit history alive. Your SkyMiles balance will remain in your Delta account regardless of which Amex card you hold.

Delta Amex users must switch to the same type of card they had originally. So, you can only downgrade to another Delta Amex credit card. The same rule applies to upgrades, too.
