Can I use Amex points to pay for part of a flight?

You can use Membership Rewards® points for all or part of your flight, prepaid car rental, vacation or cruise booking and for hotels booked and paid in advance when booking through American Express Travel. When you book your flight with us, there are no blackout dates or seat restrictions.

Yes, American Express offers a flexible feature called "Pay with Points" that allows you to use your Membership Rewards points to cover all or just a portion of your flight cost. When you book through the Amex Travel portal, you can choose exactly how many points you wish to apply at checkout; if you don't have enough to cover the full fare, you simply pay the remaining balance with your Amex card. Typically, for most cardholders, points are worth 1 cent each when used this way. However, if you have the Business Platinum Card, you get a 35% points rebate on select flights, effectively increasing the value. Alternatively, you can book your flight directly with an airline and then use the "Cover Your Charges" feature in your Amex app to "erase" the transaction using points after it has posted to your statement. While this is convenient, be aware that you often get much better value (sometimes 2–3 cents per point) by transferring your points to airline partners like Delta, British Airways, or Emirates instead of using the "Pay with Points" method.
