For U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents, no visa is required to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John) when traveling directly from the U.S. mainland or Puerto Rico. Because the USVI is an unincorporated U.S. territory, it is considered domestic travel; however, since May 2025, you must present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or a passport to board your flight. For international travelers, the U.S. Virgin Islands follow the same entry requirements as the mainland United States. If your country is part of the Visa Waiver Program, you will need a valid ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). If not, you must obtain a standard B-1/B-2 visitor visa from a U.S. Embassy. Always be aware that while you don't need a passport to enter the USVI as a U.S. citizen, you will undergo a brief "pre-clearance" customs inspection when flying back to the mainland to ensure you aren't transporting restricted agricultural items or exceeding duty-free liquor and tobacco limits.
