Can I walk from Terminal 4 to terminal 1 at JFK?

You can't walk safely between them: the road has no pavement and is not made for pedestrians. The airtrain runs in a closed loop so it is impossible to take the wrong train - even if you go the wrong way, eventually the train will go back to Terminal 1.
