In the world of DC Comics, Shazam can and has beaten Superman, primarily because Superman has a well-documented vulnerability to magic. While Superman is physically stronger and faster in raw terms, Shazam’s powers are entirely mystical in origin. The "Lightning of Zeus" that Shazam summons is a magical force that can bypass Superman’s invulnerability. In the famous Kingdom Come storyline, Shazam nearly defeats Superman by repeatedly calling down his lightning while holding the Man of Steel in place. However, the outcome usually depends on the writer and the circumstances: Superman has the advantage in experience and tactical intelligence, whereas Shazam is often portrayed with the mind of a child (Billy Batson). If it comes down to a purely physical brawl, Superman usually has a slight edge, but if Shazam utilizes his magical nature effectively, he is one of the very few beings in the multiverse who can consistently go toe-to-toe with, and potentially defeat, Superman.
