There are free shuttle buses from the FLL terminals to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Station at Dania Beach. Of the 40 busiest U.S. airports, 10 don't allow pickups unless drivers have a chauffeur's license or livery plates, including Atlanta, Orlando, Detroit, Boston and Philadelphia. Seattle, Minneapolis and New Orleans started allowing legal ride-sharing pickups only this year.
Uber will actively monitor all active cars at the time requested to find a ride for you but cannot guarantee a ride. In big cities and busy areas, there will likely be cars available throughout the day and night, but in the exceptional case that no drivers are available, you will be notified immediately.
The availability of an UBER for an airport trip will depend on the time. If you're traveling at a “normal” time, it shouldn't take more than 10–15 minutes to get an UBER. However, if you have a very early morning flight (5:30am or so), there may not be nearly as many cars available and it's possible you won't find one.
Fort Lauderdale is a great city for getting around by bike. Few of the hotels are actually right on the beach, so a bike ride along the beach road provides water views the whole time. There are bike lanes on the streets you're most likely to travel on elsewhere, too, when you head inland.
