Can you add someone last minute to a cruise?

You can usually add a third or even a fourth person to your cabin at a later date as long as the room is large enough to accommodate the extra passengers. If the cabins on a cruise ship don't get reserved by the normal deadline, the cruise line may extend the "early-bird" rate.

Adding someone to a cruise at the "last minute" (within 2–3 days of sailing) is extremely difficult and often impossible in 2026 due to strict international manifest laws. Cruise lines must submit a final passenger list to government border authorities (like the U.S. Coast Guard or EU Customs) usually 48 to 72 hours before departure. If you try to add someone after this "lock-out" period, the system will not allow the update. Even if you are outside that window, you can only add a person if the ship hasn't reached its maximum lifeboat capacity—which is different from cabin capacity. If the ship is "sold out" on safety capacity, you cannot add a third or fourth person even if your room has an empty bed. If you can add them, expect to pay the current prevailing market rate, which is often much higher than your original booking price, plus additional port taxes and fees.

But what if you add a third person into the cabin? You might not realize it, but while most people cruise with two to a cabin, you can cruise with three people… and even a fourth cabinmate. For some passengers this is a great way to sail with family or friends, without the cost of an additional room.

If a cruise is filling up quickly, the company has no reason to release a sale to entice customers. But if a cruise's departure date is fast approaching and the ship is only partially booked, prices will drop, and complimentary add-ons will increase, resulting in some happy customers.

Cruise lines typically follow strict departure times at all ports of call. While exceptions may be made for passengers participating in excursions organized by the cruise line, the cruise ship generally does not wait for late passengers.

Cruise prices are typically shown per person, based on double occupancy, which means that the price is based on two people sharing a cabin. If you're traveling solo, you may be required to pay a single supplement fee, which is an additional fee that covers the cost of the second person in the cabin.

MORE DETAILS

A few cruise lines feature a limited number of cabins designated for single occupancy sparing the solo cruiser from having to pay double. While cruise lines advertise these single cabins as having no supplement, the single rate is usually slightly higher than the per-person rate of comparable double occupancy cabins.
