Can you bring your own alcohol on VIA Rail?

Can we bring our personal alcoholic drinks on board? No, Provincial laws forbid passengers from consuming personal alcoholic drinks on the trains. Personal alcoholic drinks may only be consumed inside private sleeping car cabins on some trains. Read VIA's full policy concerning alcoholic beverages.

Does Amtrak check bags for alcohol? There are no restrictions regarding bring private stock alcohol onto the train in your baggage. Sleeper berth passengers are allowed to consume their private stock in the privacy of their sleeper berth.

We invite passengers who wish to travel with more items than allowed by our hand baggage policy to use the trains offering our baggage car service. Please note that baggage must be checked at least 45 minutes before departure at terminal stations and 30 minutes at intermediate stations.

When you travel with us, you can carry-on two free pieces of luggage. Each item should not exceed 50 lbs. (23 kg) and needs to be 28 x 22 x 14 inches in size. For those Amtrak families traveling with infants under the age of two, your baby items (strollers and diaper bags) will not count towards your carry-on limit.
