Can you buy food inside Pompeii?

Seeing as all the actual restaurants in Pompeii are outside the grounds, an easier way to rest during your tour is with a picnic. There are a number of picnic areas inside the park, allowing you to pack some lunch prior to getting there, or to purchase food from the cafeteria near the forum area.

Yes, you can buy food inside the Pompeii archaeological site, but the options are limited to a single, centrally located cafeteria and restaurant near the Forum. Known as the "Autogrill" or "Pompeii Scavi Reststop," this facility offers standard Italian snacks like pizza slices, paninis, salads, and gelato, as well as coffee and cold drinks. In late 2025, a more upscale dining experience called the "Pompeii Chora Restaurant" opened in the Casina dell'Aquila, offering dishes made with local agricultural products grown within the park itself, such as specialized wines and olive oils. However, because the site is massive (over 160 acres) and requires hours of walking, many visitors find it more convenient to bring a refillable water bottle (which can be topped up at the ancient public fountains throughout the site) and some light snacks. Just be sure to consume your own food only in designated picnic areas to respect the historic surroundings. For a better culinary experience, most experts suggest having a full meal in the modern town of Pompei immediately outside the "Porta Marina" or "Amphitheatre" gates after your tour is complete.
