Whether you can check bags to your final destination depends on your airline and itinerary. For most domestic and international flights booked as a single ticket (one PNR), airlines offer "through-checking," meaning your luggage is automatically transferred between connecting flights. However, a major exception exists when entering countries like the United States or India from an international origin; even if your bags are tagged to the final destination, you must usually collect them at your first port of entry, clear customs, and then drop them at a "connecting baggage" counter. If you have booked two separate tickets on different airlines (a self-transfer), you will almost always have to collect your bags at the transit airport and check them in again for the next leg of your journey.
