A reservation is compulsory on all TGV and OUIGO trains as you have an assigned seat, just like on an airplane. Once you book your reservation, you're committed to a specific train on a set day and time.

OUIGO is a low-cost rail service company established in 2013 as part of the SNCF group. Unlike the TGV INOUI service, OUIGO trains only have one class, which is equivalent to second-class travel. This is why OUIGO tickets are so cheap - from €10 for adults (depending on the destination) and €5 for children.
In my opinion just as reliable as any other train. The only snag could be that in the unlikely event of a cancellation you would receive a voucher rather than a refund. Also baggage is charged extra and you are supposed to be at the station 30 minutes ahead.
The carry-on luggage must be placed under the passenger's seat. The hand luggage should be placed on the passenger's knees during the journey. Families with small children can bring their pushchairs without paying OUIGO extra luggage fees.
Tickets will be checked on the platform before boarding Ouigo trains. Check-in for Ouigo trains opens 30 mins before the train leaves and closes 5 mins before departure. Before boarding any train at a Spanish mainline station, travellers are required to put their luggage through an X-ray security check.

But there is added comfort in full class, and given the nominal price differnce and your travel companions, I would suggest that you choose first class. There's somewhat more room in first class and the seats are *supposed* to be slightly more comfortable. You can't be served a meal at your seat in second class.
In November 2022, SNCF-owned Ouigo launched a new high-speed, low-cost route between Madrid and Valencia. From summer 2023 it will also run to Alicante. Tickets will initially be priced at €9 one-way with one suitcase, but will cost around €30 after the launch period.
