We just got back from 16 days (Rome, Tuscany, Cinque Terre & Lake Como) & we used the public water spouts all over Italy to fill up our water bottles. No problems at all. Yes, the tap water is safe and I found it to be very good. There are a few water spickets around Bellagio that I used to fill my water bottles too.
