Can you drive on the beach at Ocean City State Park?

In most seasons, you can drive on the beach, so you won't have to schlep picnic food, chairs, day tents and bags all the way from the parking lot. Please observe the 25-mph speed limit, as it is a state highway.

No private vehicles are permitted on the beach at any time. For your protection, the Ocean City Beach Patrol is on duty during the summer between 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM every day from Memorial Day weekend through the third Sunday following Labor Day Monday.

*A proper part-time 4WD system with a low range and a locked center differential will get through almost any beach. If you've got a full-time AWD road car, you can do a limited amount of deep sand cruising, but there's probably not a lot of ground clearance.

It shall be unlawful to park any commercial vehicle unless performing services for or on behalf of the Mayor and City Council. It shall be unlawful to utilize any vehicle for sleeping quarters. No Overnight Parking Allowed – Vehicles and trailers will be towed if parked between 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Most beach campsites are located in the slightly sheltered area behind the sand dunes. Camping right out on the beach near the waves is not usually permitted for safety reasons and to protect wildlife like sea turtles and nesting birds.
