Driving on the west side of K'gari (Fraser Island) is much more restricted and difficult than on the famous "75 Mile Beach" on the east side. While the east coast is a gazetted highway suitable for most 4WDs, the west coast consists largely of soft sand, tidal mudflats, and dense mangroves. There are no through-roads along the western beach. You can access specific parts of the west coast, such as Kingfisher Bay or Moon Point, via inland tracks, but these tracks are often very narrow, deep with soft sand, and require advanced 4WD skills. Driving on the actual western beach is generally not recommended and can be illegal in certain protected zones to prevent damage to the fragile ecosystem and "coffee rock" formations. Furthermore, the western side is notorious for "bogging" vehicles because the sand doesn't compact the way it does on the ocean-facing side. If you want to explore the west, it is best to do so via a guided boat tour or by staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort and using their designated tracks. Always check the Queensland National Parks "Condition Report" before attempting any western island travel in 2026.
