As of early 2026, the short answer is yes, but it has become significantly more complicated and expensive. After years of delays, the REAL ID Act—noted by a star symbol in the upper right-hand corner of compliant licenses—went into full effect on May 7, 2025. If your license does not have this star, it is considered non-compliant. However, as of February 1, 2026, the TSA has introduced a "ConfirmID" process for those without a REAL ID or a valid passport. Travelers with non-compliant licenses must now pay a $45 fee and undergo additional identity verification, which the TSA warns can cause delays of 30 minutes or more. Alternatively, you can still fly by presenting other acceptable forms of identification, such as a U.S. passport, a Global Entry card, or certain digital ID passes on your smartphone. Children under 18 are currently exempt and do not need a REAL ID when traveling with an adult companion.
