Can you get Internet on the underground?

WiFi is available in ticket halls, walkways, and platforms at more than 260 stations. WiFi is not available in tunnels or in-between stations, but we launched our mobile network on the Underground in December 2022 and are continuing to build on this throughout 2023 and 2024.

Your phone should automatically search for and connect to the mobile signal as if you were above ground. There's no need to install any special software or app - just continue to use your mobile phone and, as long as it is 4G/5G-compatible, it should connect to the station signal automatically.

Currently around 10% underground tube stations have 4G and 5G mobile coverage. The first Tubes stations in London's West End have received high-speed mobile coverage. 4G and 5G is available at Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road ticket halls and on the Central line between the stations.

They're much smaller because 5G radio wave frequencies are much more limited than 4G. The 5G radio waves can't penetrate through structures or travel as far, so there's no reason to build cell towers particularly high for these. A 5G cell tower only needs to be 20-30 feet to be effective.
