Can you go one way on The Jacobite train?

You can ride the Jacobite Express one way between Fort William and Mallaig, or choose a round-trip ticket that allows for an hour and a half to explore Mallaig before the return journey. Advance booking is highly recommended?a very limited number of same-day tickets are available.

Currently, the Jacobite Steam Train is primarily sold as a same-day return experience, and the operator, West Coast Railways, generally does not offer one-way tickets through their standard online booking system. The journey is designed as a round-trip "experience" starting and ending in Fort William, with a stop in Mallaig. If you only wish to travel one way (for example, to stay in Mallaig or continue to the Isle of Skye), you would typically still have to purchase a full-price return ticket. However, some passengers choose to simply "abandon" the return portion of their journey. For a legitimate one-way ticket on the same scenic route without the vintage steam engine, you can book a standard ScotRail service, which runs on the same tracks and offers the same stunning views of the Glenfinnan Viaduct for a fraction of the cost and with much greater flexibility for one-way travelers.

Top Tip: For the best views, sit on the left hand side on the way to Mallaig and on the right hand side on the way back! Whilst Mallaig may be the destination, a trip aboard The Jacobite is just as much about what you will see and experience on the journey, as it is about where you end up.

That being said, if it's just a good photo of the Jacobite train passing over the viaduct you want, then I recommend getting the ScotRail train to Glenfinnan and waiting at the viewpoint.
