Can you hike Mt. Fuji from Hakone?

Hikers have been known to get altitude sickness at the top, so a Fuji climb should not be taken lightly. However reaching the summit in time for the sunrise is a truly memorable experience. From Hakone, the easiest ascent to the top is via the Subashiri path.

No, you cannot hike Mt. Fuji directly from Hakone, as the two locations are roughly 60 to 90 minutes apart by road or rail. Hakone is a hot spring resort area located to the southeast of Mt. Fuji. While Hakone offers some of the best Mt. Fuji viewing hikes (such as the trails on Mt. Myojingatake or Mt. Kintoki), these trails stay within the Hakone mountain range and do not lead up the slopes of Fuji itself. To actually hike Mt. Fuji in 2026, you must travel from Hakone to one of the four main trailheads, the most popular being the Fuji-Subaru Line 5th Station. You can take a bus from Hakone-Yumoto or Gora to Gotemba Station, and then transfer to a dedicated mountain bus that goes to the Gotemba 5th Station or the Subashiri 5th Station. Because the climb to the summit of Fuji takes 5–7 hours and is only permitted during the official summer climbing season (July–September), it is generally not feasible to combine a full Fuji summit hike and a Hakone visit into a single 24-hour period without significant exhaustion.
