Can you hike up Aiguille du Midi?

In a spectacular ascent it is possible to travel from Chamonix up to the top of the Aiguille du Midi over 2800m vertical in only about 20 minutes.

An elevator inside the rock rises the visitor the final 42m to the top terrace at an altitude of 3,842m. From the terraces of the Aiguille du Midi, there is a departure point for the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car, the highest cable car in the world, which connects France to Italy.

One of the big challenges is altitude. On top of this, given the glaciated conditions of Mont Blanc, you will also need experience using crampons and ice axe. Due to the possibility of encountering crevasses, all guided parties will be roped.

A one-way trip takes 30 minutes in a four-person gondola. Its operation is very weather dependant – if the wind is too strong, or if there is poor visibility, the gondola will close. Once at the far side you can connect on foot to the new Skyway Monte-Bianco (Helbronner) cable car.

How long does a visit to the Aiguille du Midi take? An average trip on the summit lasts around two to three hours, although it can be closer to five if you're taking your time looking around. You can take as long as you like on a visit although in winter the last lift up is at 15:00 and the last decent at 16:30.

It is advisable to exchange some cash before arriving in Chamonix. VAT is currently at 20%. There are reduced rates of 10% (restaurant food, attraction entry fee, public transport) and 5.5% (essential foodstuffs, books, concerts).
