Can you keep a knife in your backpack?

That depends on the knife. Laws vary from state to state, but most places don't allow large knives or double-edged knives. Where I'm at, the legal length is 5–1/2? blade length. That would be whether it's a folding knife in your pocket or a fixed blade in a sheath on your belt or either of them in your backpack.
