Can you smoke in Mexico airport?

Mexico City Airport rules Smoking is not permitted in most of the terminal buildings. However, both terminals one and two have an indoor smoking lounge for passenger's use.

As of 2026, smoking in Mexican airports—including Mexico City (AICM), Cancun, and Guadalajara—is strictly prohibited in all indoor areas, including designated "smoking lounges" that may have existed in the past. Mexico enacted some of the world's most stringent anti-tobacco laws in 2023, which effectively banned smoking in all public places, including terminals, patios, and even some outdoor terraces. Violating these rules can result in heavy fines, often starting around 3,000 Mexican Pesos (roughly $175 USD), and security personnel are generally vigilant about enforcement. Furthermore, the import of e-cigarettes and vaping devices into Mexico is illegal; customs officials will often confiscate these items upon arrival, and travelers may face additional fines. If you need to smoke, you must do so in specifically marked outdoor areas located well away from the terminal entrances before you enter the building or clear security. Once you are "airside" (past security), there are typically zero legal options for smoking or vaping until you reach your final destination.
