Can you spend English money in Barbados?

Many establishments will accept payments in US Dollars with change being given in local currency. However please note that smaller establishments, especially in country areas, may only accept BD Dollars. We suggest you take US$ or £GB and exchange them for local currency. ATM machines are widely available.

While the official currency is the Barbadian Dollar (BBD), which is pegged to the US Dollar at a rate of 2:1, you cannot typically spend British Pounds (English money) in local shops or restaurants. Most businesses in Barbados will readily accept US Dollars alongside their local currency, but they are not equipped to handle GBP at the point of sale. If you arrive with English money, you will need to visit a local bank or a "Bureau de Change" to exchange it for Barbadian Dollars. In 2026, the island has also become very digital-friendly, so using a Visa or Mastercard is the most convenient way for UK travelers to pay, as the conversion is handled automatically by your bank. It is worth noting that if you use US cash, you will almost always receive your change in Barbadian Dollars. To avoid high exchange fees, it is best to rely on a travel-friendly debit card or withdraw local currency from an ATM once you arrive on the island.
