Can you still ride mules to the bottom of the Grand Canyon?

There are now ONLY 10 mule saddles daily available to take you to the bottom of the Grand Canyon for an overnight stay at Phantom Ranch. These are the ONLY Grand Canyon Mule rides that go to the BOTTOM of the Grand Canyon. An overnight trip, staying the night at Phantom Ranch, a rustic oasis nestled deep in the Canyon.

Not dangerous at all. The mules are trained and go down the canyon every day. However it is very popular with up to a year waiting list so most people walk/hike into the Grand Canyon instead.

At approximately 9:00 this morning the Grand Canyon Regional Dispatch Center received a radio call from a mule wrangler reporting that a mule had lost it's footing, fell, and then rolled over the passenger that it had been carrying. The accident occurred approximately 2 ½ miles below the rim on the Bright Angel Trail.

The scenery of the Grand Canyon is phenomenal if all you do is stand on the edge and look. But to see it from the vantage points where we'd been is impossible to put into words. Riding the mules is scary, but it is also safe. Just trust your mule, and it will be worth every minute of terror.

Be prepared- this is not a simple hop on and ride trip. This is a difficult ride and can test your nerves as your mule rounds the bend and tests your fear factor. We did the overnight to the Ranch and I can say it is a wonderful once in a lifetime trip that you will treasure.

Q: How long will it take to get to the bottom from the South Rim? A: The South Kaibab Trail is 6.8 miles to Bright Angel Campground and the Bright Angel Trail is 9.3 miles. It will take most hikers between 4 and 5 hours to get to the campground on either trail.
