The water here is crystal clear and notably calm because the beach is sheltered from the "Meltemi" (north winds) by the massive Mesa Vouno rock. Because the sand is black, it absorbs a tremendous amount of heat, so the water often feels slightly warmer here than at other Mediterranean beaches. However, the black sand can become scorching hot under the sun, so you will definitely need flip-flops to get to the water's edge. The seafloor drops off relatively quickly, which is great for adults who want to swim immediately, but parents should keep a close eye on small children. The beach is "Blue Flag" certified, meaning it meets high standards for water quality and safety, including the presence of seasonal lifeguards.
