Using Uber in Venice is a tale of two cities: the mainland and the historic island. In the historic center (Venezia), which is entirely car-free and composed of canals and footpaths, standard Uber cars are not available and physically cannot operate. To get around the islands, you must use water-based transport like vaporettos (water buses), traghetti, or expensive private water taxis. However, in Mestre (the mainland part of Venice) and for trips to and from Marco Polo Airport (VCE), Uber is available and operates normally with Uber Black and Uber Van services. In recent years, Uber has also integrated with local taxi services in Italy, so you may be able to hail a traditional taxi through the Uber app. If you are looking for a "water Uber," there are independent apps for booking water taxis, but the traditional Uber app is strictly for land vehicles and will only be useful until you reach the edge of the lagoon at Piazzale Roma or the Santa Lucia train station.
