Can you use your bus pass on British rail?

English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) passes (or bus passes as they are often referred to) are not valid on all trains. There are some exceptions to this where these passes can be used in local areas, subject to local authority policy.

Generally, no, a standard English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) bus pass cannot be used on British Rail services. These passes are specifically designed for local bus travel. However, there are a few highly localized exceptions: in certain areas of Greater London, specific segments of the "Overground" or "Elizabeth Line" may accept older person's passes during off-peak hours, and in the West Midlands or Merseyside, some local rail links are included in the regional concessionary package. For the vast majority of the UK, if you want discounted rail travel as a senior or disabled person, you must purchase a separate Senior Railcard or Disabled Persons Railcard, which typically costs around £30 per year and provides a 1/3 discount on most rail fares. Always check with your local council, as some provide "add-on" rail benefits to the bus pass for a small annual fee.
