Can you visit Petra in a day trip from Amman?

Petra can be explored in one day from Amman so don't opt for longer day itineraries if you're limited to budget and time. There're innumerable accommodation options available in Wadi Mousa (the most important city of Petra). A few hotels can also be found in between Wadi Mousa and the close by village of Taybeh.

Yes, visiting Petra as a day trip from Amman is entirely possible and a very common itinerary for travelers short on time. However, it is a long and demanding day. The drive from Amman to Petra via the Desert Highway takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours each way. To make the most of the trip, you should leave Amman by 6:00 AM or 6:30 AM (often using the daily JETT bus or a private driver) to arrive at the gates when they open or shortly after. This gives you about 6 to 7 hours to explore the Siq, the Treasury, and the Royal Tombs before the return journey in the late afternoon. While you can see the "highlights," a day trip is physically exhausting and won't allow enough time to hike up to the Monastery or the High Place of Sacrifice. For those who want to avoid the 7-hour round-trip commute in a single day, an overnight stay in Wadi Musa is usually preferred.
