Can you visit Urquhart Castle without paying?

You have to go through the visitor centre to get to the ruins, so you have to pay the admission fee.

To fully experience the ruins and the visitor center, you must purchase a ticket from Historic Environment Scotland. While you can see the castle from various viewpoints along the A82 road or from a boat on Loch Ness for free, access to the site itself is strictly ticketed. As of 2026, adult prices are roughly £12–£15 depending on the season, with discounts for children, seniors, and students. If you are an "Explorer Pass" holder or a member of Historic Environment Scotland, entry is included in your membership. It is highly recommended to book your tickets online in advance to guarantee entry, as it is one of Scotland's most popular tourist destinations and often reaches capacity during the summer.
