While it is technically possible to hike portions of the perimeter of Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) in Hakone, there is no continuous, flat pedestrian path that goes entirely "around" the lake due to steep cliffs, private properties, and rugged forested areas. Most people "walk" the lake by exploring specific scenic sections, such as the Ancient Cedar Avenue (Kyudo) and the lakeside path near the Hakone Shrine and the Onshi-Hakone Park. To see the whole lake, the most popular method is a "land and water" combination: walking between the towns of Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi (about 20–30 minutes) and then taking the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (the "Pirate Ship") to reach the other side. For serious hikers, there is the "Hakone Outer Rim" trail which circles the mountains above the lake, offering stunning views of Mount Fuji and the water below, but this is a multi-day trek that requires significant fitness and preparation.
