Can you walk from town to town in Cinque Terre?

The towns can be visited by bus, boat, train, or by hiking trail. We chose the hiking option. There is a 11 km trail (called the Blue Trail) connecting Riomaggiore to Monterosso al Mare.



Yes, you can walk between the five towns, but in 2026, several sections of the famous "Blue Trail" (Sentiero Azzurro) remain subject to seasonal closures and entry restrictions. The most famous stretch, the Via dell’Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola, is fully open but requires a separate reservation and often operates as a one-way path during peak hours to manage crowds. The section between Manarola and Corniglia remains closed indefinitely due to landslide damage, requiring hikers to take the more rigorous "High Trail" through the vineyards. You can still walk the popular segment from Corniglia to Vernazza and Monterosso, but be aware that during the 2026 high season, a one-way walking system may be enforced on weekends between 9 am and 2 pm. Always check the current "Cinque Terre Card" requirements, as you need a paid pass to access the coastal trails.

You definately DO NOT need a guide. If you only have one day, Monterosso is the largest town and this is where you should go. If you plan a full day, I would recommend to hike to the next town (Vernazza). It's about an hour and a half, and sooooo beautiful!

Cost. Visiting Cinque Terre should be cheaper than the Amalfi Coast. Of course, so much depends on your choices – how you travel around, where and how long you stay, which restaurants you dine at, etc. But in general, the Amalfi Coast is a much more expensive destination than Cinque Terre.
