You can wear denim shorts on safari, but they are generally not recommended by experienced guides for several practical reasons. First, denim is a heavy fabric that does not breathe well in the African heat and becomes very uncomfortable if it gets wet or dusty. Second, shorts leave your legs exposed to biting insects, such as tsetse flies and mosquitoes, as well as thorny acacia bushes if you happen to step out of the vehicle. From a color perspective, traditional blue denim can actually attract certain insects like tsetse flies, which are drawn to dark blues and blacks. Most safari experts suggest lightweight, moisture-wicking cargo pants or zip-off trousers in "safari colors" like khaki, tan, or olive green. These colors help you blend into the bush and reflect the sun. However, if you are on a "closed-vehicle" safari or staying primarily within a luxury lodge, denim shorts are perfectly fine for casual wear around the camp. Just be prepared for the dust of the savanna to settle into the thick fibers of the denim, making them feel quite "gritty" by the end of a long game drive.
